Gay & Lesbian
Boston has one of the largest and liveliest gay communities in
the country offering extensive resources and a superb quality of
life for GLTB individuals. The first legal gay marriages in America
took place in Boston and Massachusetts on May 17, 2004 offering
the married GLTB community the same legal rights as the rest of
its citizens.
Because of its rich diversity and depth, Jamaica Plain has offered
the lesbian and gay community a haven for decades. A melting pot
of Boston, JP (as it is colloquially known) is traditional and progressive
in a way that distinguishes it among Boston communities and has
appealed to gays and lesbians seeking urban amenities in a verdant
and intellectually stimulating environment. Many artistic, musical,
civic groups and churches in Jamaica Plain have gay and lesbian
chapters and events central to their social activities. Jamaica
Plain has long been a place where being lesbian or gay has been
not just tolerated but celebrated, creating a uniquely comfortable
environment for everyone.
Outside of Boston and Jamaica Plain and only 2 hours or less by
car, ferry or air, is Provincetown one of the most popular eastern
resorts for the GLTB community, drawing people from all over the
world to its sandy shores, top-rated restaurants and exciting nightlife.
